What Is Tooth Decay?





Tooth decay (caries) is a DISEASE!  It is 100% PREVENTABLE!
 
The disease is caused by an INFECTION that has the ability to DECALCIFIES (the removal of Calcium) the tooth's structure.


 

WHAT IS CAUSING THE INFECTION?

 

 

Caries (tooth decay) is mainly caused by a specific bacterium called STEPTOCOCCUS MUTANS* that is present in PLAQUE (bacteria in mouth).  This is a typical infection like Tuberculosis. Without Streptococcus Mutans, tooth decay CAN'T OCCUR.

  *  The main bacterium present in dental plaque. 
      Other smaller numbers include Lactobacillus species
