A large filling can restore a tooth, but it can also leave the remaining natural tooth structure vulnerable to further damage. Our goal is to strengthen your tooth before it breaks.

If a tooth has a large old filling, a chipped cusp, a crack or significant loss of tooth structure, you may not need to wait for it to break before doing something about it.

Same-day ceramic reinforcement uses modern digital dentistry and custom-made ceramic restorations to rebuild and protect weakened areas of the tooth while preserving as much healthy natural tooth structure as possible.

At Blouberg Dental Practice, suitable cases can be digitally scanned, designed and milled using our CEREC technology — allowing many restorations to be completed in a single appointment.

Not every tooth is suitable for ceramic reinforcement. Your dentist will assess the condition of your tooth and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

An option between a filling and a full crown

Ceramic reinforcement is a custom-made restoration designed to replace missing tooth structure and, where appropriate, protect weakened areas of a tooth.

Depending on the amount and location of tooth structure that has been lost, the restoration may be designed as an:

Inlay
A ceramic restoration that fits within the cusps of the tooth.

Onlay
A ceramic restoration that extends over one or more cusps to protect areas that have become weakened.

Overlay
A more extensive restoration that covers a larger portion of the chewing surface while preserving the remaining healthy tooth structure.

The important point is that the restoration is designed around the tooth that remains. It is not simply about filling a hole. It is about restoring the missing structure and, where clinically appropriate, providing additional protection to the remaining tooth.
